Lots of people spout about patriotism, both online and off. The world is a big, complex place, and we humans are very complex, sometimes contradictory creatures. All I know for certain is that I have a very, very small chance of personally making a difference on the world stage. What I can do is local, and every person, making a difference locally, can have global impact. That's why this page has what it does on it.
Patriotism for me does not mean the sort of nationalistic pride which results in oppression or judgementality based on prejudices. Patriotism for me means understanding the form of government you live under and actively participating in it, and in contributing to your community in ways that reflect your values. Intolerance gets no welcome here. IDIC, folks: Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.
I'm proud to be a United States citizen, because I truly believe that our form of government's creation and defense back before I was born was a good step in the history of humanity. There have been other steps, and there darned well better be more, but I think we've got a good thing started here. And before we muck it up with any short term solutions, we each need to understand how it's supposed to be working now.
